Reasons For Learning A Second Language

in Language
One of the most common myths associated with learning a second language if English is your first language is that you do not have to learn a second language because everyone learns English. This is definitely not true.

If you venture outside of Great Britain or the United States you will definitely find out that not everyone speaks English. There are also many times when learning a second language, even if you do not venture outside of the United States would be helpful.

If you want to know that statistics on how much of the world's population actually speaks English, you may be surprised. In fact, only 5.6 percent of the world's population speaks it as a primary language and only about 11.2 percent speak it as a second or even a third language.

However, if you have never had an experience in which you wished that you knew another language on a fairly regular basis, you will not sympathize with these facts. There are many other good reasons to learn a language though.

One of the number one reasons you should learn a second language is because you will cross communication and understanding barriers that may not otherwise have been crossed. There are many business transactions that cannot occur without someone who understands wise business practices and has a second language.

You will not always be able to rely on the other company having someone who can clearly speak English and convey what is meant. In addition, as you study another language you will be able to learn about the culture of the people who speak it.

Other cultures can seem strange and may be a little upsetting until you learn why they do what they do. For example, in Asia it is quite common for two people to speak to each other while standing quite close.

This can be very uncomfortable for someone from the United States who has learned that everyone has personal space and you should not interfere with this personal space. Through understanding another culture you will be able to understand the people better and less miscommunication and ill judgment will occur.

In addition to improving communication abilities, you will be able to add an outstanding talent to your resume. Many employers are beginning to look for people who can speak a second or third language.

These people are invaluable as only 9.2 percent of those in the United States are actually fluent in second language. The business world is entering a global economy and the need for those who can communicate with others around the globe is growing.

Businesses cannot hope to compete in other countries if they do not have people who can correctly write and speak in that language. Every kind of store and employment can use additional languages, not only those who sell things.

Knowledge of another language will never hurt your chances of being hired. Studies have also found that when a student really works to understand and learn another language, he or she will be able to understand his or her own language much better as well.

It may be able to help you get an A in all of the English classes that you always hated. Plus, it will help your grade on all of the important tests such as the SAT, ACT, GRE, MCAT, and LSAT.

As you learn the vocabulary words you will be able to increase your ability to remember things. This definitely cannot hurt your grades in other classes as well.

As a result of higher grades and higher test scores, you will have a much better chance of getting into the college or graduate school of your choice. Many language study programs offer the opportunity to travel to a country that speaks that natively language you are learning.

Sometimes this experience is something that you can add to your application to get into a school as well. Some schools even require that you have at least two years of a foreign language in order to even be considered for application.

You do not want to kill your chances of getting in before you have even started. Knowledge of a second language and culture will help you catch references to that culture and language in literature, music, and films that will make it much more interesting and enjoyable.

It will also make traveling a lot less stressful and much more enjoyable. On your vacations you will be able to make friends that you will be able to come back and visit time and again.
